TikTok Video Not Uploading? 7 Proven Fixes

Why TikTok Uploads Fail

TikTok upload failures have four common root causes: an incompatible video file, a slow or unstable internet connection, a temporary TikTok server issue, or an app that needs updating. Working through the list below in order will fix the vast majority of cases.

Fix 1: Check Your Video Format and Length

  1. TikTok accepts MP4 and MOV files. AVI, WMV, and MKV files will fail silently.
  2. Maximum video length is 10 minutes for most accounts. Videos longer than your account’s limit will not upload.
  3. Resolution must be at least 720p. Videos below that threshold are sometimes rejected.

Fix 2: Check Your Internet Connection

  1. TikTok uploads require a stable connection — not just any connection. A 2 MB/s upload speed is the practical minimum.
  2. Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or vice versa, and retry.
  3. If on Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or restart it.

Fix 3: Reduce the Video File Size

  1. Files over 287 MB (the TikTok upload limit) will fail every time.
  2. Trim the video in your phone’s built-in editor, or use an app like CapCut to compress it before uploading.
  3. For most phones, the built-in “Share” export at Medium quality keeps the file under 100 MB for a 3-minute video.

Fix 4: Force-Close and Reopen TikTok

  1. On iOS: swipe up from the bottom → swipe away the TikTok card.
  2. On Android: Recent Apps → swipe away TikTok.
  3. Reopen the app and attempt the upload again. Stale app state causes about 20% of stuck uploads.

Fix 5: Clear TikTok Cache

  1. Open TikTok → Profile → three-line menu → Settings and Privacy.
  2. Scroll to Cache and Cellular DataFree up space.
  3. Clear cache, then restart the app and try uploading again.

Fix 6: Update the TikTok App

  1. Open the App Store or Google Play → search TikTok → check for an available update.
  2. TikTok frequently changes its upload processing pipeline; an outdated app can send uploads to a deprecated endpoint that no longer works.

Fix 7: Use the TikTok Web Uploader

  1. Go to tiktok.com/upload on a desktop browser.
  2. The web uploader has a higher file size limit and bypasses app-side bugs entirely.
  3. If your video uploads successfully via web, the issue is isolated to the mobile app.
Pro Tip: If TikTok shows “Your video is being processed” but it never appears on your profile, it may have been silently flagged for review. Wait 24 hours — most flagged videos either get cleared or you’ll receive a notification with the reason.
