Why Premium Features Don’t Activate Immediately
After a successful Spotify payment, your account can take up to 15 minutes to reflect the upgrade. If you’re still seeing ads after 20 minutes, the problem is either an account sync failure or a mismatch between the account that paid and the account that’s logged in to the app.
Fix 1: Log Out and Log Back In
- Open Spotify → tap your profile picture → Log Out.
- Wait 30 seconds, then log back in with your exact Spotify credentials.
- This forces the app to pull a fresh entitlement token from Spotify’s servers, which is the most common fix for “I paid but still have Free.”
Fix 2: Confirm You’re on the Right Account
- Go to spotify.com/account in a browser and log in.
- Under Account Overview, check the displayed plan. If it shows “Spotify Free,” the payment may not have gone through.
- Check Subscription → Payment History to confirm the charge processed.
Fix 3: Check for a Declined Payment
- If your bank declined the charge (common with prepaid cards and some international cards), Spotify downgrades you without a clear notification in the app.
- At spotify.com/account → Subscription → update your payment method with a valid card and manually confirm the subscription.
Fix 4: Reinstall Spotify
- Uninstall Spotify completely from your device.
- Reinstall from the App Store or Google Play.
- Log in. The fresh install pulls the latest entitlements without any cached Free-tier state.
Fix 5: Cancel and Resubscribe (Last Resort)
- If the issue persists and your payment clearly went through, cancel your subscription from the account page.
- Wait for the confirmation email.
- Immediately resubscribe. This clears any billing loop stuck in Spotify’s system.
- Contact Spotify support via support.spotify.com if you are charged twice.
Pro Tip: If you subscribed through Apple’s App Store or Google Play, the payment goes through Apple/Google — not Spotify directly. To cancel or update billing, you must do so through the App Store subscriptions page, not Spotify’s website.
