Disney+ Error Code 83: What It Means and How to Fix It
What Error Code 83 Actually Means
Disney+ Error Code 83 is a catch-all error that Disney uses for device compatibility, connection, and DRM (digital rights management) issues. Despite the vague label, it almost always falls into one of four categories that are straightforward to fix.
Fix 1: Restart Everything
- Close the Disney+ app completely.
- Restart your device (phone, smart TV, streaming stick) — not just standby, a full power cycle.
- Restart your router: unplug, wait 30 seconds, replug.
- Reopen Disney+. This resolves Error 83 in about 40% of cases.
Fix 2: Sign Out and Back In
- Open Disney+ → profile icon → Log Out.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Log back in. Disney+ will re-authenticate your device, which often clears DRM certification errors that trigger Error 83.
Fix 3: Update the Disney+ App
- Search for Disney+ in your device’s app store and install any available updates.
- On Samsung Smart TVs, go to Apps → gear icon (settings) → Auto Update → search Disney+ to update manually.
- Error 83 frequently appears on app versions more than 2 versions behind the current release.
Fix 4: Check Device Compatibility
- Disney+ dropped support for some older smart TVs and devices. Check help.disneyplus.com for the current supported device list.
- Devices commonly affected: older Amazon Fire TV sticks (gen 1), first-gen Chromecast, and some 2016-era smart TVs.
- If your device is no longer supported, using Disney+ through a web browser (on a laptop) or a newer streaming device is the practical solution.
Fix 5: Disable VPN
- Disney+ blocks VPN IP addresses aggressively. If a VPN is active, disable it and try again.
- Even a system-wide VPN you’re not consciously using for streaming will trigger Error 83.
Pro Tip: If Error 83 only appears on specific titles (not all content), the issue is DRM on that particular piece of content rather than your device. Try a different title — if others play fine, the problem will usually self-resolve within a few hours as Disney’s CDN re-distributes the content key.
