ChatGPT Memory Not Saving: Enable and Fix Guide
How ChatGPT Memory Works
ChatGPT Memory is a feature that lets the model retain facts about you across conversations — your job, preferred tone, recurring projects, and so on. It is available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and requires manual activation. If yours isn’t saving, the cause is almost always one of the issues below.
Step 1: Verify Memory Is Enabled
- Click your profile icon (bottom left) → Settings.
- Navigate to Personalization.
- Ensure Memory is toggled ON. It is off by default for new accounts.
Step 2: Check What Memory Has Already Saved
- In Settings → Personalization, click Manage Memory.
- You will see a list of things ChatGPT has remembered. If this list is empty, Memory is enabled but hasn’t saved anything yet — you need to prompt it to remember something.
- Try saying: “Remember that I’m a software engineer who prefers concise answers.”
Step 3: Memory Does Not Work in Temporary Chats
- Click the pencil icon (new chat) at the top of the sidebar.
- If the chat header shows “Temporary chat”, Memory is intentionally disabled for that session — ChatGPT won’t save or recall anything.
- Start a regular chat (not temporary) to use Memory.
Step 4: Memory Is Disabled for GPT-4 With Browsing/Tools
- When you enable tools like code interpreter, DALL·E, or web browsing in a conversation, ChatGPT memory recall is sometimes bypassed.
- Test Memory in a plain GPT-4 conversation without any tools active.
Step 5: Clear and Rebuild Memory
- Go to Settings → Personalization → Manage Memory → Clear all memories.
- Start a new conversation and explicitly tell ChatGPT several things to remember.
- Ask “What do you remember about me?” to verify the new facts were stored.
Pro Tip: ChatGPT Memory is not available in the GPT-3.5 model or on the free tier. If you can’t find the Memory toggle in Settings, your account does not have access — upgrade to Plus or wait for the free tier rollout.
