Windows 11 Black Screen After Update — Fix It
Why Windows 11 Shows a Black Screen After Update
Almost always caused by the GPU driver being incompatible with the new kernel version, or the update process stalling during display initialization.
Fix 1: Wait 10 Minutes
The update finalization process can look like a black screen for up to 10 minutes on slower drives. The cursor should be movable during this period.
Fix 2: Try Ctrl + Alt + Delete
If you get a blue screen with options: Task Manager → File → Run New Task → type explorer.exe → OK. This restarts the Windows Shell if it crashed during the update.
Fix 3: Boot into Safe Mode and Roll Back GPU Driver
Restart → Hold Shift while clicking Restart → Troubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → F4 (Safe Mode). Then: Device Manager → Display Adapters → Right-click GPU → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver.
Fix 4: Uninstall the Problematic Update
Safe Mode → Settings → Windows Update → Update History → Uninstall Updates → Find most recent update → Uninstall → Restart.
Fix 5: Startup Repair
Boot from Windows 11 installation media → Repair Your Computer → Troubleshoot → Startup Repair. Automatically fixes boot-blocking issues introduced by updates.
