MacBook Not Turning On — Step-by-Step Fix

First: Distinguish No Power from No Display

Listen for fan noise when you press the power button. If fans spin but the screen is black, it is a display issue. If nothing happens at all — no fan, no sound — it is a power issue.

Fix 1: Charge for 30 Minutes First

A completely discharged MacBook will not power on immediately when plugged in. Leave it on charge for 30 minutes with no attempt to power on, then try again.

Fix 2: Try a Different Charger and Cable

MagSafe and USB-C cables can fail invisibly. A faulty cable is responsible for a significant percentage of “won’t turn on” reports.

Fix 3: Reset SMC (Intel MacBooks)

Shut down → Hold Shift + Control + Option + Power for 10 seconds → Release → Press Power to boot. The SMC handles power, charging, and thermal management.

Fix 4: Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Power on → immediately hold Option + Command + P + R for ~20 seconds until you hear the startup chime twice. NVRAM stores settings that can cause display failures on boot.

Fix 5: Run Apple Diagnostics

Hold D while powering on (or Option + D for internet diagnostics). This identifies hardware failures. A logic board or battery issue means a Genius Bar appointment.
